Trichotillomania (TTM or trich), also known as “hair pulling disorder,” is an impulse control disorder that triggers an overwhelming urge to pull the hair out at the roots, from the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other parts of the body. Approximately 2% of the world’s population, primarily women, experience this urge.
Some experts believe trichotillomania is closely linked to obsessive compulsive disorder, because of its compulsive nature. They also believe there may be both biological and environmental factors leading to a chemical imbalance in the brain. Others associate it with self-harm, where a person deliberately causes themselves some type of physical pain, which releases endorphins and provides a temporary sense of well-being. Whatever the cause, the effects can be drastic, such as noticeable thinning hair, shortened patches, sparse or missing eyelashes and eyebrows. If the condition is not intercepted early, the damage can be permanent, meaning that hair in the most affected areas may not grow back. It is believed that the earlier the condition can be intercepted, the better the chances are of growing and keeping your own hair. The most effective treatments are thought to be cognitive behavioural strategies known as habit reversal and stimulus control, along with emotional regulation and acceptance. |
