Telogen effluvium can occur when any number of physical or emotional changes happen in a woman’s life.
The three natural stage of hair growth are anagen or growth, catagen or transition, and telogen or resting. Normally, telogen indicates re-growth: a new hair pushes the old hair out and the cycle begins again. But a significant physical change can force all hair follicles into a long-term telogen state, which is known as telogen effluvium. Because there is no new growth happening, telogen effluvium leads to hair loss. This is a temporary situation: when the conditions that led to telogen effluvium are relieved, hair will slowly start to resume its natural cycle. |

Chemotherapy and Radiation
Chemotherapy and radiation are two courses of treatment given to people diagnosed with cancer. Chemo results in hair loss more often than not, whereas with radiation it depends upon the area receiving treatment.
For most, a diagnosis of cancer brings with it the stigma of hair loss, which has a very real emotional impact on women. Chemo hair loss Chemotherapy drugs attack other cells besides the cancer cells, putting them into a state of telogen effluvium until the treatment ends and the cells can begin to recover. Hair loss due to chemo is usually temporary – hair will grow back anywhere from 3 to 10 months after treatment ends, though it can have a different texture or colour for some time. For some, hair loss happens gradually – a few extra hairs on the brush or in the shower drain – but for others it can fall out suddenly in clumps. Often, scalp tenderness comes with the hair loss. There is no known method which can guarantee you will not lose any hair. Radiation hair loss Hair loss resulting from radiation is similar to that from chemo, but is usually more localized to the area receiving the radiation and any other nearby areas that may be affected by the radiation beam. Because hair cells grow at a fast rate, they are among those most likely to be at risk for damage by radiation. Hair loss may be temporary or permanent. If hair loss is temporary, it will likely grow back between 3 and 6 months after radiation. How Hair Flair can help |

Childbirth
Increased levels of estrogen during pregnancy prolong the growing phase of your hair follicles, often resulting in thicker hair, but after childbirth, estrogen levels drop and many more follicles enter the natural resting stage, telogen. As a result, more hairs than the usual 50-150 will fall out per day. This abnormal shedding should decrease 6 to 12 months after childbirth and your hair should return to its normal thickness.
This type of post-pregnancy shedding happens to 40-50% of women. Many moms decide to cut their hair so that they find less in their brush and drains. Note: If you experience substantial hair loss while pregnant, consult your doctor or midwife. It could be caused by stress or hormonal changes, or you may be experiencing a mineral deficiency or other imbalance. How Hair Flair can help |

Stress
Hair loss can be a symptom of excessive stress or anxiety. Everyday normal stress isn't usually the culprit -- it's more likely to be deep psychological stress or a significant physical change such as severe illness or drastic fluctuations in weight. Conditions such as alopecia areata and trichotillomania can be associated with this type of stress as well.
When it comes to hair loss, stress can be a chicken-and-egg scenario: stress and anxiety may result from hair loss, or hair loss may result from stress and anxiety.
Some people with anxiety perceive hair loss that is nonexistent, but the increased stress may result in hair loss.

Thyroid conditions
When thyroid hormone levels decline (hypothyroidism), either due to an underlying condition or other causes, hair loss can result.
Hormonally-induced hair loss takes place when testosterone is converted to a less useful version called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT attacks the follicle and shrinks it. Some thyroid disorders result in elevated DHT levels. Some thyroid drugs cause hair loss as a side effect, but insufficient drugs or the wrong kind of drugs can also lead to hair loss. Hormonal changes
In many cases where a woman experiences significant hair loss, hormonal changes are the culprit. Anytime estrogen levels peak, including during and after pregnancy, hair loss can result.
Hormonally-induced hair loss takes place when testosterone is converted to a less useful version called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT attacks the follicle and shrinks it. Women with a history of polycystic ovarian syndrome may over-produce DHT and therefore suffer hair loss. When progesterone levels are too low, it can trigger hyper-estrogen or estrogen dominance, which in turn can lead to excessive hair shedding and hair loss. Menopause

Medication and the Pill
Many medications, including the birth control pill, are linked to hair loss. Oral contraceptives can have a distressing effect on normal hair growth, particularly for women who are genetically predisposed to hair loss.
The American Hair Loss Association recommends that women strongly predisposed to hair loss use non-hormonal birth control, and that all women use low androgen index birth control pills. Discontinuing the use of the pill can cause hair loss similar to how childbirth does, because of the estrogen boost the pill provides. How Hair Flair can help |
Other medications, from acne treatments to epilepsy drugs to weight loss drugs can also cause hair loss.
Hair loss caused by most medications will stop after discontinuing use of the medication, though not in all cases. Treatment: stop using the medication and ask your doctor for an alternative not associated with hair loss. |
Lupus
Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system can attack hair follicles, leading to hair loss. In fact, thinning hair can be an early sign of lupus. Lupus can cause hair texture to change and become brittle.
With some types of lupus, rashes on the skin can cause hair to fall out or scar the hair follicles so much that they no longer produce hair. In these cases, hair loss is usually permanent. How Hair Flair can help |
